Bible Study in January 2012
James, Pearls for Wise Living
James,
Pearls for Wise Living,
is a Catholic Bible study that offers
“pearls for wise living” by applying the wisdom of James to the present
day.
James, as one of the most practical books of the Bible, is a collection
of
teachings on issues faced by ordinary Christians in everyday life. For
anyone
who has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James offers a wealth
of
practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday
circumstances.
Join us in a 10-week bible study on the book of James at St. Wenceslaus
and
Immaculate Conception churches, beginning on January 22,
2012.
The registration deadline is
Thursday, December 22, 2011, and space is limited.

ADVENTURELAND
TRIP
JUNE 28
From our
Parish nurses...
IT'S
ABOUT OUR KIDS!
Our
kids are being targeted by
tobacco companies
|
Dissolvable tobacco products
(DTP) have made their way to our area and many are still unaware of
their
existence or their appeal to youth. DTP’s
are essentially compressed tobacco designed to dissolve in the user’s
mouth
allowing all of the ingredients to be swallowed. The
perception exists that these products are
safe alternatives to cigarettes and may be supported by the argument
that there
is no medical data showing otherwise. This
is partially true, there is no medical
data because these products
are so new that their ingredients have not been released and they have
not been
approved by the FDA. Nicotine levels of
DTP’s can be equal to three cigarettes and given their convenience, the
possibility of nicotine poisoning appears to be more likely. To date, there is already a reported case of
poisoning that involved a 3 year old and just one Orb (one of Camel’s
DTP’s).
In the past, tobacco
supporters have used a variety of tactics to confuse, intimidate, and
drown out
the opposition. Their arguments have
included false or unsubstantiated information, half truths, and
irrational
“what’s next” statements. This is
occurring in Linn
County
right now.
Tobacco retailers argue that
youth don’t have access to them because they are not 18.
The same law applies to cigarettes, but about
90% of current smokers began as teenagers plus leading researchers
believe
DTP’s to be more addictive than cigarettes.
DTP’s increase their youthful
appeal through flavoring, easily concealed, no smoking, and no spitting. The packaging itself seems to be familiar and
attractive to youth as well. Surveys in Virginia and Utah
have shown that youth see these products as mints, gum, or candy. Additionally, those youth that weren’t
currently using tobacco said that they would be willing to try the
DTP’s. Has there ever been a tobacco
product more
oriented to youth?
In Linn County,
there have been ordinances proposed intended to protect our youth. One of these ordinances would make DTP’s
unavailable in Linn
County. Almost certainly, the opposition will voice
familiar arguments while supporters will state their desire to protect
their
kids. In the end, staying up to date on
how area youth are affected by tobacco advertising and products will be
vital
in helping them live life addiction-free.
Please email curt.wheeler@linncounty.org or
call 892-6920 for more information or to schedule a presentation. |

WELCOME MARION
MORELAND
OUR NEW SECRETARY OF
PASTORAL
MINISTRIES
"I'm originally from
California but also lived in Colorado and Japan.
We've lived in Iowa a little over 4 years. I've been married to Dana
for 26 years and we have three daughters: Christina (21), Catherine
(17), and Char-lene (13). We have homeschooled our children from birth.
"In addition to volunteer work, I worked as a Lit-urgy Assistant and as
a pro-tem Liturgy Director and been involved with areas such as
liturgy, environment, RCIA, infant baptism, training altar servers,
marriage preparation, ministry to the sick and various other tasks.
"I am currently working to obtain my B.S. in Sports and Health Science
and hope to complete in that in the next couple of years. When I'm not
at church or studying, you can likely find me on a dance floor with my
family; square dancing, round dancing or ballroom dancing. I have also
worked with a youth and young adult exhibition square dance team and
traveled to Ukraine to represent the USA in three international folk
dance festivals.
"This opportunity is really an answer to unvoiced prayers and I am
looking forward to serving Immaculate Conception and St. Wenceslaus
parishes."
